The Maratha ruler Chhatrapati  Shivaji  Maharaj was the founder of the navy of the Maratha military forces. Historian Sir  Jadunath Sarkar  noted: Nothing proves Shivaji’s genius as a born statesman more clearly than his creation of a navy and naval bases.
